Today we have great news for you:
We have successfully installed our prototype of the BMW i5 Frunk. But the best thing about the test vehicle was certainly that it was a BMW i5 eDrive 40 Touring. So we can now confirm that our Frunk fits there as well. But since pictures speak louder than words, you can simply decide for yourself what you think about our solution.
Let’s start with the little things, the “black part”

Since BMW decided to have a cable holder that extends directly into the room, we had to find a solution to get enough space for a Frunk. For this reason, we replaced the black plastic holder with a 3D bent part made of stainless steel. During the conversion we realized that we would probably have to supply new cable holder clips. We were able to disassemble them somewhat intact, but it’s really no fun and the result isn’t really satisfactory.
After this adjustment, installation is super easy.
It provides enough space for the whole charging equipment
With the BMW i5 Frunk we once again made sure that the original cover can be reinstalled after installation. We don’t see any reason for this and it’s definitely not technically necessary, but if we can fulfill our customers’ wishes, then we’re happy to do so.
Otherwise, this is what awaits you:
As you can clearly see, there is a large seal all around the engine compartment that is only slightly open on the sides. Therefore, of course, there was no water penetration during our washing test and the Frunk will remain dry and clean.
We don’t have a picture of what the engine compartment looks like with the cover on, but you just have to open your hood. But we noticed a noise when we shook the cover and started looking. The Frunk does not collide with any part, including the cover. The cause was quickly found:
There is about 2mm of clearance in this area and when the cover moves it hits the plastic piece underneath and makes a noise. Therefore we will include an additional EPDM strip with our Frunk to fix this. But that in itself has nothing to do with our frunk.
We are super happy with our BMW i5 Frunk and are pleased that it also fits the Touring variants. We have already released the series and are now waiting until it arrives in our warehouse in August.
